“How you can help” Letter from Larry’s Daughter Lauren 2009
Dear Family, Friends, Associates and Loving Caring Strangers,
By now most of you know, but some of you are hearing for the first time about the tragic accident that happened to our beloved Larry Dubey on Saturday January 10, 2009.
On that beautiful sunny day our dear friend Larry was having a fun time snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain, CA when he fell and broke his neck. He was airlifted to a hospital in Reno, where he underwent surgery on Monday January 12th. He broke his C5, C6, C7 vertebrae which resulted in severe damage to his spinal cord. Larry is now a quadriplegic with a chance of having some movement in his shoulders and elbows. Larry is now on the long hard road of recovery and therapy.
He is currently at Craig Hospital in Englewood, CO, a top rehabilitation hospital for brain and spinal cord injury. In his time there he has made lots of progress, but still has a long way to go.
This tragic life-changing event will be a huge financial burden for Larry and his family. This is obviously creating a lot of stress for Larry knowing that he will no longer be able to provide for his family, instead feeling that he is a burden to them.
So this is where we come in. As his family, friends, associates and just loving giving caring strangers, your contribution together with many others, no matter how large or small – once, monthly or yearly – will have a serious impact on Larry’s recovery, not only medically but also giving him peace of mind knowing that his family is taken care of financially. Furthermore, the costs of setting up this new kind of lifestyle are immense in order for Larry to have the appropriate equipment, doctors, rehabilitation and overall quality of life that he wants and needs. We are currently fundraising with the assistance of the National Transplant Assistance and Catastrophic Injury Fund (NTAF), an organization that assists families like ours in fundraising and collecting the money raised to then help our family pay for uninsured medical expenses, including but not limited to car modification, home modification, in-home health care, equipment, and alternative therapies. NTAF sort of acts like a bank that holds the funds raised and then we can draw on that account as needed. This sort of fundraising is essential for us because Randi and Larry’s insurance covers very little in the way of equipment, home health care and rehab after he leaves Craig Hospital. Donations to NTAF are 100% tax deductible, and the money you give goes STRICTLY to Larry-this organization sets up a “campaign fund” on his behalf. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to Larry…
Dear Larry and Randi: You have family in Denver and we want to help in anyway we can. We found out about Larry’s accident and transfer to Craig Hospital the day before leaving town for a week-long Caribbean cruise with our 2 “kids”, (Hana, 25 y.o., Elie, 22 y.o.). We’re back now, and are trying to get in touch so we can meet you guys, visit Larry, tell you about Denver’s best Deli’s and generally help in any way we can….please call,(303-770-5311) or email us,(gitlz@comcast.net). We look forward to hearing from you. Gail and Paul Zwiebel
does Andre Richard know of this?
I hope and pray that my old friends put forth their own,
but that the greatest carpenter I have ever known,
André,
may not know, may not still be alive,
have you been in touch?
have you sent word?
with all that I have been in touch with,
I hope some of those would do so.
I’m quite sure that Stephan,
in amidst the demise of your Chevy Apache truck
met her own demise,
on Los Feliz,
NO NOT MY OWN doing,
as you described to your brother,
yet this only,
a mark only you would recognize,
I DID NOT PUT YOUR TRUCK in such peril!
It was Stephan!
Have you ever been in touch with,
and as the greatest carpenter I have ever known,
only because you introduced me to him,
does André Richard even KNOW
of your own dilemma?
Get in touch with him,
if only he would still be alive,
for what he told as story of him and who became his wife,
perhaps the greatest story,
the greatest romance TRUE,
I have ever heard.
May the same be to you.
May the same greatest ANYTHING,
become so deserving of what you have become to so very many of ALL of us.
I have not contacted André at all.
I doubt he knows what foul affliction has become your own,
but that his influence became so much part of our own,
in that the photos shown from his best work before the Children’s Museum was taken in YOUR OWN part of the woods,
Malibu,
have you been in touch?
Does he even KNOW?
Is he still alive?
How much other than you or I have ever known,
could such not be because we both had become
such friends,
such associates,
does André even KNOW?
I hope that ALL I knew then do!
I hope that John Write knows.
(Remember him?)
I hope that Stephan Camp, (now “Gibson”)
does,
and that ALL I knew back then DO NOW KNOW!
Sent you kudos,
(At least,)
and wish you well.
The best that all of us have been,
can only be attributed
to the likes that we know you,
what you have ever been,
what you continue to be as mentor to us all,
and all that we could ever have become,
each of us owe that,
to your own influence.
Thank You for making us better folk than we could ever be without ya!
